Solar Charger from LevinDirect

I thought I would kickstart my blog with a product review from a recent purchase of mine.

Modern technology is truly amazing. The simple fact that I can power my devices from the sun is awesome!

I have been interested in solar technology for a while now and finally decided to make a purchase. I love everything outdoors, including skiing, hiking, biking, camping, you name it! I also love having my phone, camera and speakers with me on some of these adventures… Too bad the batteries don’t last forever!

Introducing the Levin™ Solstar Solar Panel Charger

Specs:

  • Size (LWH): 5.6 inches, 2.95 inches, 0.54 inches
  • Weight: 5.28 ounces
  • Battery: 5000mAh Lithium Ion
  • Meant for: iPhone’s, iPads, Android smartphones, tablets and more!
  • Cool Features: Flashlight, Dual USB outputs, Rain-resistant and Dirt/Shockproof, charges full from 7-8 hours in the Sun* and you can even plug it in to get a quicker charge.

*I still need to test actual battery capacity and usage.

I ordered two of these handy little devices and gave one to my best friend Shelby, an outdoor and environmental enthusiast. I have had a great experience with my solar charger (yellow) however Shelby didn’t have the same luck and told me that her device popped open (green). Her problem was potentially caused by leaving it outside for too long in the Sacramento sun. I am in the process of contacting customer support and will update you all on the happenings. In the meantime here are some pictures and a link to the product. Overall, I’ve loved mine and it has proved useful numerous times.

*Update*

Contacted customer support and they were extremely helpful and offered to send out a replacement solar charger. They mentioned that “When the remaining juice is at/over 75%, solar charging or other operations in a over-heated circumstance would lead to product swelling up.” Sounds like Shelby’s was just out in the sun too long. Stay tuned for charging estimates.

After weeks of product use, I can honestly say that this little solar charger has come in handy more than a few times. It makes a great external battery and the fact it can be powered by the sun is truly incredible. Would recommend as a gift to an outdoor enthusiast or really anyone who is frustrated with their batteries dying and not having an external battery source.
